![]() ![]() For its 70th edition, she partners with Amal Clooney, Donatella Versace and Rihanna who together with Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Andrew Bolton, have anchored the gala on the theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.Ī vexed theme by all means, with some throwing in the words blasphemy and sacrilege to the fashion mix, Andrew Bolton has defended the choice by saying, “Some might consider fashion to be an unfitting or unseemly medium by which to engage with ideas about the sacred or the divine, but dress is central to any discussion about religion. Since taking the helm in 1995, Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour has taken the Met Gala for a stellar and sparkling turn with the help of the likes of Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry who have all co-chaired the event with the high-priestess of fashion. ![]() Nothing less for the benefit that was first founded in 1948. So much so that when this year’s controversial theme was announced, the hype and subsequent build-up around the fete was closely watched as it was guarded. Whatever way you choose to see it as, it only means one thing-it is a pretty damn big deal. A coming together of style, film, music and art, the glorious Met Gala is often touted as either the Oscars or Superbowl of social fashion events. ![]() While it may just be another dreaded start of the week for most, it is a date highly anticipated by the voracious fashion folk. Catholic aesthetics seem to reflect our current conflict, the showy fantasy of our ever-growing desires and aspirations for fame, wealth and success vs the repressive purity of political correctness we inflict on ourselves and each other. One of the most revered, if not the holiest nights of fashion, the Met Gala becomes a veritable stomping grounds where the best, brightest, and the boldest descends on the hallowed grounds of the fine art museum. As curator Andrew Bolton said on fashion and religion ‘Although this relationship has been complex and sometimes contested, it has produced some of the most inventive and innovative creations in the history of fashion.’ From a personal stand-point, the one thing I’ve taken from the last ten years is that controversial subjects are much better explored, talked about and played with in all their complexity, than swiftly cancelled and added to the ever increasing weight of our shared shame. Controversy loomed from two sides - on the one hand condemned as irreverent by the likes of Piers Morgan (must we really bring him with us into 2020?), on the other the exhibition celebrated a religious institution caught up in ongoing controversies and political disagreements. Inherently about our complicated relationship with desire, fashion’s at its best when examining tensions. However, 2018’s Heavenly Bodies: Fashion in the Catholic Imagination wins for me, not only because it was the most visited exhibition in the museum’s history, but also in many ways it was the most provocative. In a decade that included Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, a larger conversation than ever thought possible on the correct definition of ‘camp’ and Rihanna’s pizza dress, it’s a challenge to pick a favourite from the Met Museum’s ten most recent offerings. ![]()
